Abstract: In this book chapter, the international status of Hong Kong is reevaluated in light of the challenges posed by the NSL. Through discourse analysis and comparative study, the chapter reveals a growing pessimism about Hong Kong’s future as a global cosmopolitan hub and financial center. The analysis highlights the perspectives of intergovernmental organizations, Western countries like the United States, the media, and multinational corporations, adopting a multi-level approach. A key finding of the chapter is the paradox in Hong Kong’s international status: increased external pressure from the West may drive Beijing to tighten its control over Hong Kong’s international relations, fueled by fears that Hong Kong could be exploited by foreign powers to challenge China’s security or the Communist Party regime. The chapter contributes to understanding the complex relationship between the NSL, Hong Kong’s autonomy, and global actors.
