Program: “China’s Global Security Initiative”, East Asia Tonight, Channel NewsAsia, Apr 19, 2024
China’s Global Security Initiative is not a novel concept; its essence and promotion largely echo previous narratives of Chinese leadersship, such as Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, China’s decline of hegemony, Peaceful Coexistence, and Community of Common Destiny.
As China’s national capabilities and influence expand, Beijing seeks to propogate new norms and values to shape a new world order. Chinese propositions advocating on anti-power politics, non-interference, and conflict resolution through dialogue aim to distinguish from Western traditional norms like democracy, human rights, alliance politics, and military intervention.
However, the effectiveness of these efforts remains questionable. China’s non-interventionalist stance and negotitation-based approach often restrain Beijing from leveraging its power or employing direct means to resolve regional crises, as illustrated by the the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
